When it comes to community volunteers, Union Bay is blessed with one of the best.
Dave Davidson moved from Powell River to Union Bay 25 years ago, and has been volunteering for the enrichment of his community ever since.
He is active with the Union Bay Community and Recreation Association, having held executive positions, including that of president for 23 years, and (currently) vice-president. Dave is also the vice-president of the Union Bay Historical Society, and is active with the Union Bay Church. In his spare time, he’s also involved in the publication and distribution of the local newsletter.
Dave says volunteering has been a big part of his life for most of his 83 years, but he pinpoints a specific time as sticking out.
“When my oldest boy, Cory, was cub age, they asked me if I wanted to be a leader. I said I would look at what it was all about, then I joined as a leader and have really volunteered with things ever since.”
Laura and Wes are his other children.
He said the pleasure he gets from volunteering is what motivates him to keep it up.
“I found it was a pleasure to share things and learn things. I guess that’s why I keep going. It’s a lot of fun. I meet a lot of people and do a lot of sharing with people. I guess I’ll keep doing it until I pass.”
Luckily for the community of Union Bay, Dave has no plans on leaving the area.
“The joy of the area, the weather and all, and all the friendships we have enjoyed over the years keeps me in Union Bay.”
He’ll keep helping out, and leaving his volunteer footprint throughout his community.
“I’ve often said, if I can leave enough information of what we’ve done, you can use it, lose it, share it or change it. There will always be someone around to fill the position.”
