2018 Coach of the Year
A nice guy, strong leader, caring, inspiring and giving. These are some of the comments you’ll hear about Curtis Cameron if chatting with people involved in soccer in the Comox Valley.
Cameron started coaching soccer when his daughter Sadie became interested in playing at age five.
“I think this is the experience of a number of coaches, and it was fun spending time with her and the other girls as they learned about soccer and being on a team,” he said.
Besides coaching house when Sadie was young, Cameron was division manager and then division liaison with Comox Valley United. He credits Darrin McLeod for his encouragement, and Paul West for his leadership within the club.
Once the girls were older, Cameron helped Wayne Kuhnert with the U12 Fury rep team, which included an academy with 23 girls and two teams. The following year, he assisted Mike Oldale and McLeod in the first year of the Riptide program.
“Both were instrumental in developing the program and elevating soccer in the Comox Valley.”
Cameron also credits Riptide soccer development co-ordinator Shel Brodsgaard and technical coach Ash Mohtadi, who brought knowledge and insight to his coaching.
Though Sadie left soccer in Grade 11, Cameron has continued helping Oldale with the Comox United Blaze rep team.
“Coaching soccer is a great opportunity to work with some dedicated people, and to watch girls not only learn about the game but about being on a team, experiencing the highs of victory, and learning to deal with defeat and disappointment.”
