Anne Buchanan has been teaching for over 30 years, with a career that has seen her in Victoria, Vancouver, and finally, the Comox Valley.
The veteran teacher has been involved with the Valley school district’s Montessori Education program at Queneesh Elementary since it started 11 years ago. She has taught every grade in that program.
The Montessori program is a child-centered approach to education that encourages students’ to reach their creative potential.
“We follow the needs of the children and help them be the best they can be,” said Buchanan, who is also trained in special needs education. “I’m guiding them, observing them to see what they need and helping them with their learning journey.”
Buchanan said her love of teaching stems from a life-long love of learning.
“That’s just how I’m wired,” she said. “As soon as I learn something I want to learn something else. I find teaching is the perfect career in terms of always learning something new while being with a whole group of students.
“My 27 students here, I’m learning constantly from them, as they are from me as well.”
Buchanan said one of her students recently asked her what she’d do if she hadn’t become a teacher.
“I had to pause, and I said, ‘I don’t think there’s another career I could imagine myself doing.’ I can’t imagine myself as anything other than a teacher,” she said.
